This year, 2007, marks Tapissary’s 30th anniversary. To celebrate, I’ve been making adjustments to the grammar. The journal is my practice sheet where I merge linguistic invention with my daily experiences.

"Spoken" Tapissary comes in 2 flavors. "Tapisi" sounds like a French Slavic blend, while "Sevens" takes English vocabulary as its base. The celloglyphs (hieroglyphs) are written the same for both the Tapisi and Sevens styles. These two spoken forms can also be written with the Latin alphabet, as seen in the following entries. For the time being, I'm focusing on Sevens.

The formulae you see preceding each phrase below (such as: [≈] + V ) refer to the cyclic grammar.

Images and Vocabulary. I base these short Tapissed texts on images. The illustrated entries give me daily practice with language, drawing and/or photography. Each day I highlight a vocabulary word, showing how it fits into a sentence.

[=] |+| The word ‘marshmallow’ came up in yesterday’s entry. +| A marshmallow is a pillow-soft sweet, dry and powdery on the outside, and sticky and bouncy inside. +| They are usually white cubes, and the large ones are about the size of a walnut. When I was a kid, +/\ a barbecue always ended in +/\ roasting marshmallows on a skewer over the coals +<> until they acquired a caramel skin and the insides were sweet and gooey. +V The çelloglyph reflects this memory, +/\ with two marshmallows roasting over a fire.

[=] /\+/\ I’ve turned for inspiration to Albert Pinkham Ryder, an American artist from the 19th and 20th centuries. +/\ I have seen several of his oil paintings hanging in museums. +∆ Ryder’s paint layers subtly capture moods within marshmallow contours. +<> The nontraditional use of the medium which leads to cracked surfaces decades later, +<> further adds to the overall effect of his technique. [≠] --/\ My drawing doesn’t do him justice, [=] +/\ but copying after the masters +<> always teaches some important points.
